First it is extremely important to realize that Jesus is not physically present on earth at this time. I am not cannibalizing a human being.
This is hard to explain to someone who doesn’t believe in spiritual things at all. I can only try by using examples that are pointing to the reality of it.

It’s like a person who is enamored by another person like a groupie.
Every word the superstar says the follower takes in. There is complete trust.
I would say that the groupie is trying to consume everything the superstar does. They are in a way ‘eating their flesh’

Or I think of super preachers who’s followers just believe every word that comes out of their mouth. The churchgoers tell each other as if it was God himself speaking. They say this is right because pastor x said so. I think this is another example of taking in another person.

To eat Jesus’ body is to follow Him like that completely and wholly.

Another example is my devouring movies. This is antichrist. I take in the whole picture show without question and it influences me. Or reading a book in this way. Both are examples of eating a thing in a way that it affects me deeply.

Eating Jesus’ body challenges me to only take Him in.

This includes reading the bible and praying. It consists of including Him in all my activities throughout the day.

I like brother Lawrence’s “Practice of the Presence of God”
https://www.ccel.org/ccel/lawrence/practice.html
It is a challenge though.

I guess it starts in the heart. What am I more interested in heavenly things or earthly things? Would I rather obsess about what my next meal is going to be or be expecting God to show me some love. What need of someone else will He show me next?

Its like eating because doing the will of God is food:

Matt 4:4 “4 But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” ” ESV2011
&

John 4:34 “34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. ” ESV2011

It is real/spiritual food.

Jesus is the spiritual restaurant. We can all go to Him and be fed.

John 6:47-51 “47 Amen, amen I say unto you: He that believeth in me, hath everlasting life.48 I am the bread of life.49 Your fathers did eat manna in the desert, and are dead.50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven; that if any man eat of it, he may not die.51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world.” -DRC

John 6:47-51 “47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me has everlasting life.48 I am that bread of life.49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” -UKJV

John 6:47-51 “47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.48 I am the bread of life.49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” ESV2011

Notice in v.48 He says “I am the bread of life.” Not ‘any bread that you consecrate is me.’
V.51 also ‘the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

He doesn’t say some wafer is my flesh.

I think v. 51 also summarizes very well what I’m trying to say, ‘If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.’

Prayer: Jesus help me always be eating of You and not the world and not myself and not the devil.
Help me consume You by being with You and reading and hearing Your commands. Help me be fed so full of Your Spirit that I actually am not hungry in this physical and dim world. I love you more than anything and anyone else. Thank You for all you give.
In keeping with what Jesus meant about the bread of life I’ll include this picture: a food we Americans can not live without:
