Mark 6:30-34 (KJ2000) ” 30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. 31 And he said unto them, Come you yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest awhile: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. 32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. 33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran on foot out of all the cities, and came before them, and came together unto him. 34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw many people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.”
What are people like who have no shepherd? They flit around looking for something and never find it.
They are starving and unprotected. They have no direction and are lost.
Daily exegesis says it is like being weary and scattered. https://dailyexegesis.blogspot.com/2011/10/like-sheep-having-no-shepherd.html
First Lutheran says it is like being harassed and helpless. http://www.firstevlutheran.org/_sermons_/sermon20080803.php
However I categorize it, sheep without a shepherd are not good. I think it is like ants or bees without a queen. The thing about shepherds are that they are of a different kind. The sheep choose their leader of a different species which is superior. This is a smart thing to do despite being so dumb. In fact the sheep are humble enough to know that they need a leader who is not like them.
Jesus is fully God and fully man. He is like us in all ways except making the wrong decision to give in to temptation. He can identify with us. Jesus is a shepherd who became a sheep. He can lead me like no human being can.
He is also God. He knows all things. He knows where the wolves are and where the food is and where the safe places to rest are.
I don’t think it is difficult to admit that we are all like sheep. Those of us following the great shepherd continue to need His guidance minute by minute. Those who do not know Him are lost.
Jesus was moved with compassion and began to teach them from verse 34. I think I need to grow in compassion toward the lost sheep.
This only happens I am follow my shepherd more closely and completely. He is the one with the directions, the food and the places of rest. I am not.
What do good sheep do? They stop running around after their own desires and ideas and quiet themselves and start listening to the Great Shepherd.
I would like to end with this passage from Psalm 46: Ps 46:10 (KJ2000) ” 10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. ”
Ps 46:11 (KJ2000) ” 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. ”
The rest of Jesus, His peace and His kingdom is upon me and I am growing toward its completion through the love of God.
Heb 4:9-11 (KJ2000) ” 9 There remains therefore a rest to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
